What impact will Brexit have on the Right To Rent Scheme for EU nationals renting in the UK? Here is our quick summary:
EEA or Swiss nationals
EU nationals, EEA or Swiss nationals are advised to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme ASAP. Nationals will receive confirmation of their entitlement to live in the UK as either settled or pre-settled. We advise letting agents to urge nationals to apply as soon as they can.
EU Nationals planning to move to the UK
Should nationals from the EU be planning to relocate to the UK, Britain is planning on implementing what they’re calling “European Temporary Leave To Remain” (Euro TLR). Should Britain leave the UK on the 31st October this scheme will be implemented. EU Nationals who wish to live in the UK after December 31st 2020 will need to apply for a “European Temporary Leave To Remain” or apply under the Future ImmigraIon System, introduced under the Theresa May government.
The Euro TLR scheme is temporary allowing foreign citizens to move and live in the UK when Brexit begins for 36 months after December 31st 2020. The scheme will only be introduced should the UK leave the EU without a deal. Irish nationals don’t need to apply to live in the UK under the Common Travel Area Arrangements.
Students
International students are allowed to live in the UK for two months after their studies have finished. These changes are expected to come in next year. Previously, international students were only able to stay in the UK for four months after their studies have ended.
